Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

It varies enormously by country. 15–20% is standard in the United States and Canada; 10% is generous in much of Europe where service is included; and in Japan tipping can cause offence. There is no universal figure.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Pre-tax is the conventional answer, since the tip rewards service rather than the government. The difference is small and few people calculate it either way, but pre-tax is what etiquette guides specify.
