Frequently asked questions

Which color format should I use on the web?

HEX and RGB are universally supported. OKLCH is worth moving to for palettes because it is perceptually uniform — lightening a color by a fixed amount looks like the same step whatever the hue, which is not true of HSL.

What contrast ratio do I need?

WCAG AA asks for 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text or UI components; AAA asks for 7:1. The contrast checker reports all three against whichever pair you enter.
