Frequently asked questions

Why is the rate different from what my bank gives me?

ECB rates are mid-market reference rates — the midpoint between buy and sell in the wholesale market. Banks, card networks and bureaux add a spread, typically 0.5% to 4%, so the rate you actually receive will always be worse.

How often do the rates update?

The ECB publishes once per working day at about 16:00 CET. There are no updates at weekends or on Eurosystem holidays, so a Sunday conversion uses Friday's rates.

Does this work offline?

Partly. The last successfully fetched rates are cached in your browser, so the tool still converts during an outage — but it clearly marks the result as using cached rates rather than pretending they are current.
