Frequently asked questions

Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?

No, and it is worth being clear about that. This reads the document's structure and typesets it cleanly — headings, lists, tables and paragraphs in the order they appear. Exact fonts, columns, floating images, headers and footers are not reproduced. For a pixel-faithful copy, Word's own Save as PDF is the right tool; this exists for when you cannot or would rather not upload the file.

Why can I not convert a .doc file?

The old .doc format is a binary Microsoft compound document with no browser-readable structure. .docx has been the default since Word 2007 and is a ZIP of XML, which is why it can be read here. Open the .doc in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.

What happens to images in the document?

They are not carried across in this version — the text structure is. Images live in word/media/ inside the file, and the ZIP extractor will pull them out at full resolution if you need them.
