Frequently asked questions

Do these QR codes expire?

No. The data is encoded directly in the pattern, so the code works forever with no server involved. Codes that expire are "dynamic" ones that encode a short redirect URL owned by a third party.

Which error correction level should I use?

Medium is right for most screens and print. Choose High if the code will be small, printed on a curved surface, or partly covered by a logo — it can still be read with 30% of the code damaged.

Is it safe to put my WiFi password in a QR code?

The generation happens entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded. But anyone who can photograph the printed code can read the password, so treat the printout itself as the secret.

Why did adding a logo change my error correction level?

A logo does not sit on top of a QR code so much as delete the modules underneath it. The only reason the code still works is that error correction can rebuild missing data, so the level is held at High — 30% recoverable — whenever a logo is present. At Low, a centred logo of any useful size makes the code unreadable.

How big can the logo be?

The tool works it out for you. Coverage is the square of the size setting, so a logo at 30% of the width hides about 9% of the symbol. That is comfortable at High; pushing past roughly two-thirds of the recovery budget leaves no margin for a crease, a reflection or a poor print, and the check will say so.

Why does my pale or pastel code not scan?

A scanner turns the image into pure black and white before it decodes anything, so what matters is the contrast between the modules and the background rather than how the colours look together. Below about 2.5:1 many scanners cannot find the code at all. The check computes the real ratio as you pick colours.

Should I download PNG or SVG?

SVG for anything printed — it is vector, so it stays sharp at any size. PNG for screens, social media and anywhere that will not accept a vector; 1024 pixels is plenty for most uses.

Can I change where the code points later?

Not with a static code, which is what this generates — the destination is encoded in the pattern itself, which is also why it never expires and cannot track you. Codes you can re-point are dynamic ones that encode a short redirect URL owned by a third party, and they stop working if that company does.
