Profit Margin & Markup Calculator

Calculate margin, markup and profit from cost and selling price — they are not the same thing.

To calculate profit margin, enter your cost and selling price. Margin expresses profit as a percentage of the selling price, while markup expresses it as a percentage of cost. A 50% markup is only a 33% margin, which is why the distinction matters when pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Both measure the same profit but against different bases. Buy at 40 and sell at 100: the profit of 60 is a 60% margin (60/100) but a 150% markup (60/40). Quoting one when you mean the other is a classic pricing error.
