Frequently asked questions

Why SVG rather than PNG?

An SVG avatar is a few hundred bytes, renders crisply at any size, and can be inlined directly into a page or a data URI. For a placeholder that will be shown at many sizes, that is strictly better than a raster file.

Will the same user always get the same avatar?

Yes. The colour and shape are derived from a hash of the name, so a given name produces an identical avatar every time — which is exactly what you want for a fallback profile picture.
