Frequently asked questions

Why can I not export to GIF or BMP?

Browsers can decode those formats but cannot write them — the canvas encoder only supports PNG, JPG, WebP and AVIF. The tool tells you rather than silently handing back a mislabelled PNG.

Which format should I choose?

WebP is the best default: roughly 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality, with transparency support and universal browser coverage. Use PNG when you need lossless quality, and AVIF when the smallest file matters more than older Safari support.

What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are flattened onto the background colour you pick — white by default.
