Frequently asked questions

Why do some fractions never terminate?

A fraction terminates in decimal only when its denominator, reduced, has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. One third has a factor of 3, so it repeats forever; one eighth is 2³, so it terminates at 0.125.

What does the bar over repeating digits mean?

It marks the block that repeats without end. 0.1̄6̄ means 0.161616… continuing indefinitely. Writing it out to a few places is an approximation; the bar is exact.
