Frequently asked questions

Why do fractions need a common denominator to add?

Because the denominator defines the size of each part. Adding thirds to quarters is adding two different units — converting both to twelfths makes the parts the same size, and only then can the numerators be added.

What is an improper fraction?

One whose numerator is at least as large as its denominator, such as 7/4. It is perfectly valid and often easier to compute with than the mixed number 1¾, which is why calculators work in improper form and convert only at the end.
