Frequently asked questions

When is a weighted average the right measure?

Whenever the values represent different amounts. A plain average of two exam scores treats a 10% quiz and a 60% final equally; a weighted average reflects what each is actually worth.

Must the weights add to 100?

No. Any positive numbers work, because the calculation divides by their total. Weights of 1, 2 and 3 give exactly the same result as 16.7%, 33.3% and 50%.
