Subtitle Converter

Convert between SRT, WebVTT, ASS/SSA, MicroDVD and plain text.

Subtitle formats differ in small but breaking ways: SRT uses a comma before milliseconds and numbers each cue, WebVTT uses a dot and requires a WEBVTT header, and ASS carries styling in a script header. This converter parses all of them into a common model and writes any of them back out.

Frequently asked questions

Why will my SRT file not work in an HTML5 video?

Browsers only accept WebVTT in a <track> element. The formats are nearly identical, but VTT needs the WEBVTT header line and a dot rather than a comma before the milliseconds — renaming the file is not enough.

Does converting lose the styling?

Converting from ASS to SRT does, because SRT has no styling model beyond basic italic and bold tags. Positioning, fonts and colours are dropped. Converting between SRT and VTT loses nothing.
