Frequently asked questions

Which score should I aim for?

For a general audience, Flesch Reading Ease of 60 or above — about a 14-year-old reading age. Government plain-language guidance in the UK and US both land near that figure.

Why do the formulas disagree?

They weight different signals. SMOG and Gunning Fog count multi-syllable words; Coleman-Liau and ARI count characters instead, so they score technical-but-short vocabulary differently. The average is usually the fairest single number.
