Whether real solutions exist. If b² − 4ac is positive there are two; if zero, one repeated root; if negative, no real solutions and two complex ones. It answers the question before you finish solving.

Why do quadratics matter outside exams?

They describe anything under constant acceleration — a thrown object, braking distance, projectile paths — and appear throughout optimisation, where the maximum or minimum of a quadratic is where its derivative is zero.
