Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. It was designed to describe populations, not individuals. It cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes often register as overweight, and it under-estimates body fat in older adults who have lost muscle.

What is a healthy BMI?

The WHO defines 18.5 to 24.9 as healthy for adults. Some health bodies use lower thresholds for South Asian populations, where cardiometabolic risk rises at a lower BMI.
