Frequently asked questions

Why does ASCII art need a monospace font?

Because it aligns characters into a grid. In a proportional font an "i" is narrower than an "m", so the columns drift and the picture collapses. Any font where every character has the same width preserves it.

How is an image turned into ASCII?

Each block of pixels is reduced to a brightness value, and that value is mapped to a character of similar visual density — a space for white, then dots, then denser glyphs like @ for dark. The ordering of that character ramp is what determines the result.
