About converting CMYK to LAB

CMYK is a print colour space, and the conversion is an approximation: screens emit light, ink absorbs it, and vivid RGB colours have no CMYK equivalent at all. CIELAB was designed to model human vision and underpins colour-difference calculations. It is the reference space rather than an authoring one. Because CMYK depends on the ink, paper and press, a conversion without a colour profile is an estimate — send artwork to a printer in their profile rather than relying on a generic number.
