Binary is base 2 — each digit is one bit, so eight digits make a byte. Octal is base 8 and groups bits in threes. It survives mainly in Unix file permissions, where 755 means three sets of read/write/execute bits. As a worked example, 11111111 equals 255 in decimal and therefore 377 in octal.
