Binary is base 2 — each digit is one bit, so eight digits make a byte. Hex is base 16 and maps exactly four bits per digit, which is why one byte is always two hex digits and why colours, memory addresses and hashes are written this way. As a worked example, 11111111 equals 255 in decimal and therefore FF in hexadecimal.
