Frequently asked questions

Why can I not use a .doc file?

The old .doc format is a binary OLE compound document with no browser-readable structure. .docx has been the default since Word 2007 and is a ZIP of XML, which is why it can be read here. Open the file and save it as .docx first.

Why do the page breaks differ from Word?

Because a .docx does not store page breaks — Word calculates them when it opens the file, using its own fonts and hyphenation. This typesets the document independently, so the content is identical but pagination may not be. For byte-identical pages, print to PDF from Word.
