Tournament Bracket Generator

Build a single-elimination bracket with byes placed correctly for any number of entrants.

A single-elimination bracket must have a power-of-two number of places, so any other field size needs byes. This generator rounds up to the next power of two, awards the byes to the top seeds, and uses standard seeding order so the strongest entrants can only meet in the final.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my bracket have byes?

Because a single-elimination bracket must have a power-of-two number of places — 2, 4, 8, 16. Any other field size is rounded up and the spare places become byes, which standard seeding awards to the top seeds.

What does standard seeding actually do?

It places entrants so the two strongest can only meet in the final, the top four only in the semi-finals, and so on. That is why seed 1 plays the lowest seed rather than seed 2 — the bracket is built by reflection.
