Punycode Converter

Convert internationalised domain names to Punycode and decode xn-- domains back.

To convert a domain to Punycode, enter an internationalised domain name and the ASCII-compatible xn-- form appears. DNS only supports ASCII, so every non-Latin domain is stored in this encoded form while browsers display the readable Unicode version.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some domains start with xn--?

That prefix marks a Punycode-encoded label. DNS can only carry ASCII, so a domain like münchen.de is transmitted as xn--mnchen-3ya.de and rendered back to Unicode by the browser.
