Passphrase Generator

Generate memorable Diceware-style passphrases from random words.

To generate a passphrase, choose how many words you want and a separator. Words are picked using cryptographically secure randomness in the Diceware style, producing phrases that are far easier to remember and type than random character strings of equivalent strength.

Frequently asked questions

Is a passphrase really stronger than a password?

For the same memorability, yes, by a wide margin. Four random words from a 7,776-word list gives about 51 bits of entropy and is easy to remember; a "complex" eight-character password gives roughly 40 and is not.

Does adding a number to the end help?

Marginally, and it is the first thing cracking tools try. Adding a fifth word adds far more entropy than any amount of character substitution, and costs nothing in memorability.
