Frequently asked questions

When should I use 301 versus 302?

Use 301 when a URL has permanently moved — search engines transfer ranking signals to the new URL and browsers cache the redirect. Use 302 for temporary moves such as A/B tests or maintenance pages.

What is the difference between 401 and 403?

401 means you are not authenticated — log in and try again. 403 means the server knows who you are and is still refusing. Confusingly, 401 is named "Unauthorized" but is about authentication.
