# SHA-256 Hash Generator

> Generate a secure SHA-256 hash from any text, in hex and Base64.

To generate a SHA-256 hash, paste text above and the 256-bit digest appears in both hexadecimal and Base64. SHA-256 is part of the SHA-2 family and remains the standard recommendation for integrity checking, digital signatures and blockchain work.

## Key facts

- **Digest size:** 256 bits
- **Inputs:** Text or any file, hashed locally
- **Verification:** Compare against a published checksum
- **Security:** Considered secure for integrity use
- **Privacy:** Runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded
- **Cost:** Free, unlimited, no sign-up

## How to use

1. Choose the hash.
2. Enter or paste your text to hash.
3. Select your file — the file stays on your device and is never uploaded.
4. Enter or paste your verify against (optional).
5. Turn "Uppercase hex" on or off as needed.
6. Press Run, then download the result when it is ready.

## FAQ

### Is SHA-256 good for storing passwords?

No. It is deliberately fast, so an attacker can try billions of guesses per second. Use a slow, salted algorithm designed for passwords such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2.

### How do I verify a downloaded file?

Switch the input to "A file", select your download, and paste the checksum published by the source into the verify box. A match means the content is byte-identical to what they hashed; a mismatch means you should not run it.

### Is my file uploaded to check it?

No. Files are read from disk and hashed in your browser, in chunks, so even very large files never leave your device.
