### Why does Git use SHA-1?

Git adopted SHA-1 in 2005 for content addressing, before collisions were practical. Git has since added collision detection and is migrating to SHA-256, but existing repositories still use SHA-1 object IDs.

### How do I verify a downloaded file?

Switch the input to "A file", select your download, and paste the checksum published by the source into the verify box. A match means the content is byte-identical to what they hashed; a mismatch means you should not run it.

### Is my file uploaded to check it?

No. Files are read from disk and hashed in your browser, in chunks, so even very large files never leave your device.
