# Retirement Withdrawal Calculator

> Model a safe withdrawal rate and see how long a pot lasts against inflation and returns.

A safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of a retirement pot you can take in the first year, rising with inflation thereafter, without running out. The well-known 4% rule assumes a 30-year retirement and historical market returns; this calculator lets you test other rates, returns and inflation assumptions.

## FAQ

### Is the 4% rule still safe?

It is contested. The original study used historical US returns over 30 years; longer retirements, lower expected returns and different markets all argue for a lower rate. Many planners now suggest 3 to 3.5% for a retirement expected to last 40 years or more.

### What is sequence of returns risk?

The order of returns matters enormously when you are withdrawing. A poor first decade forces you to sell more units at low prices, permanently damaging the pot — even if the long-run average return is identical.
