# Recurring Deposit Calculator — Monthly Savings Maturity

> Work out what a monthly recurring deposit matures to, with quarterly compounding.

A recurring deposit is calculated instalment by instalment: each monthly payment compounds quarterly for however long it stays invested, then the results are summed. ₹5,000 a month at 6.8% for five years deposits ₹3,00,000 and matures at roughly ₹3,57,000 — a return that looks lower than the rate because the average instalment was only invested for half the term.

## FAQ

### Why does my RD return look lower than the interest rate?

Because your money is not all invested for the full term. The first instalment earns interest for the whole period, the last for one month. The average is roughly half the term, so a five-year RD at 6.8% returns about 19% on the total deposited — not 34% as compounding on the full amount would suggest.

### Is an RD better than a SIP in a mutual fund?

They are different risk products, not competing versions of one. An RD has a guaranteed return and no market risk; a SIP has neither guarantee nor cap. Over long horizons equity has historically beaten deposit rates, and over short ones it has frequently lost money. Term length is what decides which is appropriate.
