# Edit or Strip PDF Metadata — Author, Title and Dates

> See what a PDF reveals about you, then rewrite it or strip it out entirely.

PDF metadata records who created a document, with which application and when — details that survive emailing and often surprise people. This shows what is there and either rewrites the fields or strips them. Creation and modification dates cannot be deleted from a PDF, only overwritten, so stripping sets them to the Unix epoch.

## FAQ

### What does a PDF actually reveal about me?

Typically your name from the operating system account, the application and version that produced it, and precise creation and modification timestamps. Documents exported from Word or InDesign often carry the author name of whoever first created the template, which is how document provenance leaks in practice.

### Does this remove everything identifying?

No, and it does not claim to. It clears the document information dictionary. Text in the document body, EXIF inside embedded photographs, tracked changes converted to comments and any XMP block written by specialist software are separate. For a genuinely anonymous document, verify with a metadata viewer afterwards.

### Why can dates not simply be removed?

They can be, but many readers and validators treat a PDF with no creation date as damaged. Setting them to 1970-01-01 is unambiguous, valid, and obviously not real — better than a file that looks corrupt.
