### How long should a meta description be?

Around 140–158 characters. Google truncates longer descriptions in the snippet, and very short ones waste the space you have to persuade someone to click.

### Does the meta description affect ranking?

Not directly — Google has confirmed it is not a ranking factor. It affects click-through rate, which matters commercially even though it does not move the ranking itself.
