# Leap Year Checker

> Check whether a year is a leap year and see the next and previous ones, with the rule explained.

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years but 1900 and 2100 are not. The exception exists because a solar year is 365.2422 days, so adding a day every four years slightly overcorrects.

### Why was 1900 not a leap year?

Because century years are skipped unless divisible by 400. It corrects the overshoot of adding a day every four years, and it is the rule most naive date code gets wrong — 2000 was a leap year, which hid the bug for a generation.
