# GST Calculator — Add or Remove GST at Any Rate

> Add GST to a price or work backwards from a GST-inclusive total, with the CGST/SGST split.

To add GST, multiply the amount by 1 plus the rate — ₹1,000 at 18% becomes ₹1,180. To remove GST from an inclusive total, divide by that same figure: ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. Subtracting 18% from the inclusive total gives ₹967.60, which is wrong by ₹32.40 and is the most common error in this calculation.

## FAQ

### How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?

Divide by 1 plus the rate — not subtract the rate. At 18%, divide the total by 1.18. Subtracting 18% instead gives an answer roughly 3.2% too low, because you would be taking 18% of the inclusive figure rather than of the base.

### What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

They are the same total tax split differently. A sale within one state splits into CGST for the centre and SGST for the state, half each. A sale across state lines is a single IGST charge at the full rate, which the centre later apportions. The buyer pays the same amount either way.

### Which GST rate applies to my product?

That depends on its HSN or SAC code, and this calculator does not guess — it computes whichever rate you select. Most services sit at 18%, essentials at 5%, and luxury or demerit goods at 28% plus a cess that is separate from GST entirely.
