# Freelance Rate Calculator

A freelance rate has to cover more than the hours you bill. Start from the income you want to take home, add tax and business costs to get the gross you must invoice, then divide by billable hours only — typically 60 to 70% of your working time, once admin, sales and learning are excluded.

## FAQ

### Why can I not just divide my target by 2,000 hours?

Because that assumes every working hour is billable and that you pay no tax or costs. In practice about a third of your time goes on unbilled work, so dividing by 2,000 understates the rate you need by roughly half.
