# Connection Information — Type, Speed Estimate & Latency

> See what your browser reports about the network: connection type, downlink estimate and round-trip time.

Your browser exposes a coarse network estimate through the Network Information API: an effective type such as 4g, a downlink figure in Mbps and a round-trip estimate in milliseconds. These are buckets derived from recent traffic, not live measurements, and Safari and Firefox do not implement them at all.

## How to use

1. Turn "Measure latency to this site" on or off as needed.

## FAQ

### Why is this not a speed test?

Measuring throughput needs a server willing to send tens of megabytes, which would mean uploading and downloading real traffic through someone's infrastructure. This page measures what your browser already knows plus round-trip latency to this site — which is the honest limit of what a static page can tell you.

### Why does effectiveType say 4g on my fibre connection?

"4g" is the top bucket the API defines; it means "at least as good as typical 4G", not that you are on a cellular network. There is no 5g or fibre value, so a gigabit line and a good mobile signal report identically.
