# Webcam Test — Check Your Camera Online

> Check that your webcam works, see the resolution it delivers and take a test photo.

To test your webcam, press start and allow camera access — the live preview appears immediately along with the resolution, frame rate and device name your camera actually reports. You can switch between cameras, request a different resolution, take a still photo and record a clip. Nothing is uploaded; the stream stays in the page.

## FAQ

### Why is my camera showing a black screen?

Almost always another application is holding it. Video-call software takes an exclusive lock on many systems, and the browser then gets a stream with no frames rather than an error. Quit the other app entirely — minimising it is not enough — and restart the test.

### Why does my camera look mirrored?

Browsers show a self-view mirrored because that is what people expect from a mirror, and video-call apps do the same. What is recorded and what other people see is not mirrored — only your own preview is.

### Why can I not get 1080p from a 4K webcam?

Constraints are a request. A camera negotiates the closest mode it supports at a frame rate it can sustain over the connection, and USB 2.0 bandwidth in particular forces a drop. The panel shows the resolution you actually received rather than the one you asked for.

### Does this work on a phone?

Yes, on both front and rear cameras. The device list is populated once you grant permission — browsers hide device labels before that, so the picker looks empty until the first successful start.
