An acronym generator takes the first letter of each significant word in a phrase and joins them. Small connecting words such as "of" and "the" are skipped by default, since real acronyms almost always drop them — PDF comes from Portable Document Format, not PDoF.

## FAQ

### Should an acronym include small words?

Usually not. Real acronyms drop articles and prepositions — PDF comes from Portable Document Format, not PDoF, and NATO skips the "of" in North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Keeping them produces something nobody would actually say.

### What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?

An acronym is pronounced as a word — NASA, laser, scuba. An initialism is spelled out letter by letter — FBI, HTML, PDF. Both are formed the same way; only the pronunciation differs.
